We recently had a Pagosa Springs client with a common problem – a chip on the corner of the soap shelf / grab bar in a fiberglass tub enclosure.

chip in fiberglass tub enclosure

This is called an “air void” and is an inherent part of the manufacturing process for these tubs but is not caused by a manufacturing defect; a tight radius in a corner often causes these issues when the corner is hit forcibly. If left un-repaired, water will erode the exposed fiberglass and eventually leak through to the backside, causing damage to the back of the shower and/or studs, walls and floors of your home.

For this repair, any loose material was removed. The area was filled with a professional-grade waterproof  fiberglass body filler and then sanded smooth in several steps to match the contours of the shower.

The correct gelcoat finish is identified from the tub manufacturer, which comes in a variety of colors that are combined to match the tub being repaired. As an authorized repair service for most of the major tub and shower manufacturers, we usually have a selection on-hand that will work without special ordering. The catalyzed gelcoat finish is applied over the filler and is allowed to cure.

The dried gelcoat is sanded with progressively finer sandpaper, then polished to produce a glossy finish!

When completed, the repaired spot has the same finish as the rest of the shower and has the same structural integrity as a new product.
